Faisal Zedan on Fingers of Fury!
Faisal Zedan is one of my favourite drummers around, lot's of fun to jam with, a deep knowledge of traditional styles of Arabic music and a humble relaxed person. It brings me great pleasure to announce that Faisal will be joining the teacher ranks at Fingers of Fury. If you ever wanted to gain more depth in your Arabic style drumming...here is your chance! Take note drummers: Faisal also offers video review tutorials. What's this i hear you ask? Well, simply send Faisal a short video of your playing along with any questions you may have and he will send you a video back with all of the answers! Not only this but he will review your technique and help you improve in all aspects of playing. All this in a video that you can then keep and use as a resource over time and when ever you like (A bit like the FoF videos)

Born March 5th. 1972 in Beirut, Lebanon and raised in Oum Dbaib, Syria, Faisal Zedan was inspired to learn and play the Derbakki. At the age of 15, after intensive study with a local drummer, Faisal embarked on a journey of learning through exposure to a wide repertoire of Arabic classical and contemporary music.Years of tireless practice, along with Gods grace, has resulted in the mastery of the Derbakki, as well as the Riq and Def ( Arabic/Turkish frame drum).
Faisal embodied the elements essential to Arabic drumming combined with a deeper understanding of the complexities of Arabic musical structures. From the classical Muwashahat and Adwar style, to simple Folkloric styles to Bellydance. Faisal also studied and performed various styles of Arabic music and drumming from Moroccan to Iraqi music the Arab peninsula and Yeman. He has also studied Eastern European styles from the Balkans and Greece as well as music of Armenia, Persia, Turkey and Afganistan. His unique approach mixes thousands of years of tradition with pure emotion and a contemporary feel.
After coming to California in 1992, he met UCLA's noted ethnomusicology professor Dr. Ali Jihad Racy and was asked to join the acclaimed UCLA Near East Music Ensemble.
In 1993 Faisal became a founding member of Near East music group Kan Zaman specialising in styles of Mawashahat and Egyptian/ Levantine genres of music. Kan Zaman has performed at Arabic cultural shows, city-sponsored events and private shows up and down the West Coast.
In 1996, Faisal taught at Mendocino's Middle Eastern music and dance camp for the first time and later became staff at the camp in 2011. Faisal met, taught and performed with many notable musicians at the camp during this time. He has also been teaching percussion workshops and private instruction throughout the United States.
In 2009, Faisal released his first instructional DVD for Arabic drumming along with a music CD. In 2011, he released a belly dance drum solo instructional DVD with the dancer Mariyah.
Currently Faisal performs with Qadim ensemble, Zikrayat ensemble and Broken Shadows ensemble.
